While I focus on sourcing as many possible foods locally, there are times when having a few additional items in the pantry helps mix things up. Here are some favorites that are available online.
I like to a variety of protein powders. Here are is what I am currently ordering:
Here are some of our favorite Raw Cacao Powders. Each region has their own unique flavor. Here are some that I have tried and liked:
Sprouted Flax Powder
Flax is much easier to digest after it has been ground. Sprouting them first activates the nutrients, offering increased bio-availability and breaks down the powerful digestive inhibitors found in flax. It also increases the products shelf life. I work with this type of ground sprouted flax to add a nice texture and nutrient boost when mixed into protein smoothies. I am listing it right after the protein, because I rarely will make a protein smoothie without either sprouted flax or soaked chia seed.
Many of our recipes will feature this amazing foodsource which is notably high in calcium, magnesium and many other minerals that the body needs for endurance and strong healthy bones. I typically eat between 2 and 4 tbsp. of soaked chia a day ( approx 1-2 cups of chia gel ).
Shelled Hemp Seed
Great flavor. They taste kind of nutty. Shelled they go down easy and blend us well too. I generally will add them after blending the smoothie because they do add a nice texture that way.
This has been consumed as a protein source in Southern/Central America dating back thousands of years. This algae only grows in healthy, optimal conditions at the bottom of bodies of sea water. It is considered to be the most complete naturally occurring protein source available.
The flavor from this is one of my favorites. I will mix this in to the protein powders to make this stuff go a long way. I will then add some locally available berries, a banana and some coconut water to make a nice smoothie.
That is it for now. Don’t forget to include my book Power Food Kitchen when you make your next order. The recipes in this book will give you a good understanding of how to make the most of the items listed on this page.
Nutiva Certified Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is one of our favorite sources of online. This brand is popular and I have been cooking with it frequently over the last few years. If you want to learn more specifically about coconut oil and all cooking oils in general, I would recommend this book – The Coconut Oil Miracle. It is one of my favorite books and also serves as a great companion to the Power Food Kitchen (book) as I only briefly summarize why the reasons why I work with it.
